Our Story
About Us
Established on May 16, 1930 by a group of young Okpe nationals based in Lagos, the Okpe Union is the oldest registered ethnic nationality organization in Nigeria. It was registered under the Land (Perpetual Succession) Ordinance of 1924, on December 13, 1934. The Okpe Union is a not-for-profit socio-cultural and political umbrella organization of the Okpe people. It’s headquarter is Lagos and it is a membership organization validated by annual subscription payment.
The Okpe Kingdom
History
Writing the History of a people colonized for centuries is never an easy undertaking. It is frost in contending postulations regarding the origin and traditions of the people, especially in the absence of reliable written historical facts or the misuse and abuse of oral evidences.
Ruling Houses
There are four RULING houses and the identity of each ruling house is : The Orhue ruling house, The Orhoro ruling house, The Evbreke ruling house, and The Esezi ruling house.
Orodjes of Okpe Kingdom
Okpe is a fatherly society which also recognises complentary matrifiliation on the basis of fatherly. Okpe Kingdom possesses four kingship groups which are named after the four sons of Okpe
Districts
Up until 2016, there were twelve Administrative Districts in Okpe Kingdom. In 2016, at the 10th Coronation Anniversary of HRM Orhue l, Mereje was partitioned into Mereje l and Mereje ll. Currently there are thirteen Administrative Districts in Okpe Kingdom.
