About Us
Established on May 16, 1930 by a group of young Okpe nationals based in Lagos, the Okpe Union is the oldest registered ethnic nationality organization in Nigeria. It was registered under the Land (Perpetual Succession) Ordinance of 1924, on December 13, 1934. Prior to the establishment of the Okpe Union, there was an Okpe-Uvwie Dance Group which included four Okpe nationals:
- D. Olori Ifovwo of Evwiryen;
- Onodiona of Okuokpokpor;
- Ogoe Ojadodo of Evwriyen; and
- Aso of Okuokpokpor.
At the collapse of the Okpe-Uvwie Dance Group, Okpe nationals decided to establish the Okpe Union and to compose songs in Okpe language. The following were elected into the first National Executive Council of the Okpe Union:
- Thomas O. Ake of Mereje Town: President.
- M. A. Ero of Ughoton: Vice President.
- Inspector Odeghe (later known as Chief Odeghe) of Oha: General Secretary.
- J. K. Ogodo of Sapele: Auditor.
- Uweriavwe Ake of Mereje Town: Treasurer.
- J. U. Igberiewe of Okuokpokpor: Assistant Treasurer.
- J. E. Uwerhievwe of Esubi: Member.
- Uko of Jeddo: Member.
- J. E. Ewhiewhie: Member.

The Okpe Union is a not-for-profit socio-cultural and political umbrella organization of the Okpe people. It’s headquarter is Lagos and it is a membership organization validated by annual subscription payment. It is open to all Okpe indigenes. Its primary concern is for the growth and development of the Okpe Nation and the enhancement of Okpe in the comity of ethnic nationalities in Delta State and in Nigeria. It was on the basis of this fundamental that the Okpe Union successfully agitated for the resuscitation of the Okpe Monarchy in 1945, when HRM Esezi ll was crowned as the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom (1945-1966), after an interregnum of almost 200 years. Esezi ll was succeeded by HRM Orhorho l (1972-2004), who in turn was succeeded by HRM Orhue l (2006 till date). Thus, the modern Okpe Monarchy was birthed by the Okpe Union. Since its foundation, the Okpe Union has played and continues to play critical role in the development of the Okpe Nation, including the battle for the restoration of the independence of Okpe as a distinct ethnic nationality in Nigeria.
