The Okpe Union Women's Wing(OUWW)
Brief on Women Wing
The Women Wing came into existence on May 15th,2021 at The Headquarters in Lagos with the election of Madam Grace Erhiurhoro Dinna as the First National Women Coordinator.
Functions
1. Sensitization of women on the role of Women in Okpe Communities.
2. Formulation of Programs that will develop the potentials of women through Skill Acquisition by using resource persons and provision of Starter Packs for Those Trained
3. Address Societal issues that militate against the advancement of Women. E.g Early marriage , concubinage / Cohabitation , Single Parenthood , Laziness/Idleness , Widowhood, Health Talk on personal Hygiene /General Sanitation .(Use of Professional as Resource persons in Town Hall Meetings.)
4. Collaboration or Laising with Government Agencies for Women Empowerment. E.g
i. Office of the First Lady.
ii. Ministry of Women Affairs.
iii. Office of Special Advisers on Social Welfare Scheme for Women and the Girl Child. etc.
iv. Okpe / Sapele Local Government Councils etc.
5. Encouragement of Mass Literacy through _Admission into Schools , Adult Education involving Formal / Informal Functional Literacy .
i. Promote Career Guidance / Counseling Units in L .G Councils.
ii. Publish Employment opportunities.
6. Encourage Government Policies that will promote gender equality and Empowerment / Appointment of qualified Professional Women into key Positions
7. Lectures on How to make your Family a Happy Home.
Achievement
1. Sixty Five(65) Okpe Women benefited from The Delta State Government Social Welfare Scheme of Widows with Monthly Stipends of #10,000
2 .Five Okpe Women were given Starter Packs of Sewing Machines an Baking Equipment like Ovum, Gas cylinders etc for Skill Acquisition after training.
Challenges
Some of the challenges of the Women Wing include the following:
a. The Women have not been sensitized about the line up programmes of the Women Wing.
b. Politicians highjack benefits to Okpe women for their own selfish interest giving consideration to family members only.
c. Most Women are not Literate to cope with modern Technology..
d. There is much poverty in the land as most Widows cannot care for their siblings. Family bond /unity is no more as everybody minds their own business .
The problem facing Okpe Union and the palace to a great extent hindered the Wing as attention and financial focused is on the legal case than development in Okpeland.
